The most stolen Hyundai models

According to a report by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), which analyzes insurance claims data, Hyundai and Kia vehicles from the 2015-2019 model years are nearly twice as likely to be stolen as other vehicles of similar age.

Among the Hyundai models, the most stolen ones are the Sonata, the Elantra, and the Santa Fe.

These models account for more than 80% of the total Hyundai theft claims in the US in 2021.

The HLDI report also ranked the most stolen vehicles of all makes and models in the US, based on the frequency of theft claims per insured vehicle year.

An insured vehicle year refers to one vehicle insured for one year, two vehicles insured for six months and so forth.

The report found that the 2016 Hyundai Sonata was the fourth most stolen vehicle in the country, with a theft claim frequency of 28.8 per 1,000 insured vehicle years.

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra ranked sixth, with a theft claim frequency of 26.4.

The reason behind the Hyundai thefts

One of the main reasons why Hyundai and Kia vehicles are so prone to theft is that many of them lack a basic anti-theft feature called an electronic immobilizer.

An electronic immobilizer is a device that prevents the engine from starting without the correct key, which has a computer chip that communicates with the car’s computer.

Without an immobilizer, thieves can easily bypass the ignition system by breaking or drilling it.

The HLDI report found that immobilizers were standard equipment on 96% of vehicles sold for the 2015-2019 model years, but were standard on only 26% of Hyundai and Kia models.

Hyundai and Kia have lagged behind other automakers in making immobilizers standard equipment, even though they have been widely available since the early 2000s.

Another factor that has contributed to the Hyundai thefts is the influence of social media, especially TikTok, where videos of stolen Hyundai and Kia vehicles being driven recklessly and crashing have gone viral.

These videos have encouraged other young people to copy the trend and steal Hyundai and Kia vehicles for fun, rather than for resale or parts.

The method of theft, which involves serious damage to the ignition system, indicates that these cars are being stolen for short-term use and then abandoned.

How to protect your Hyundai from theft

If you own a Hyundai or Kia vehicle that does not have an immobilizer, you may want to consider installing one or upgrading to a newer model that has one.

Immobilizers have been proven to reduce vehicle theft losses significantly, according to the HLDI.

You may also want to invest in other anti-theft devices, such as steering wheel locks, alarm systems, or GPS trackers, that can deter or detect thieves.

Additionally, you should always park your Hyundai in a well-lit, secure, and visible area, and never leave your keys or valuables inside the car.

You should also report any suspicious activity or theft attempts to the police and your insurance company as soon as possible.

By taking these precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of Hyundai theft and help stop this alarming trend.

What are the other most stolen cars?

According to the data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the other most stolen cars in the US in 2021 were the following:

1.Kia Optima (18,918 thefts)

2.Toyota Corolla (18,636 thefts)

3.Nissan Altima (18,284 thefts)

4.GMC Full-Size Pickup (16,662 thefts)

5.Toyota Camry (17,094 thefts)

These cars are mostly popular, affordable, and easy to break into models that have high demand for parts or resale value.

Some of them also lack electronic immobilizers, which are devices that prevent the engine from starting without the correct key.

Hyundai has started to add immobilizers to newer models, but older cars are still easy targets for thieves.
