They are both headquartered in South Korea and have a long history of producing high-quality vehicles. But are they the same company? Let’s find out.

The History of Kia and Hyundai

Kia was founded in Korea in 1944, while Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company began in 1947.

Hyundai Motor Company wasn’t founded until 1968. Kia proceeded to tackle decades of production and sales, putting out numerous models in collaboration with other automakers like Ford and Mazda.

But in 1997, Kia filed for bankruptcy during the Asian financial crisis.

This is the point in the story when Kia and Hyundai change their relationship significantly. Hyundai had released its first automobile, the Cortina, with Ford in 1968.

This lead ultimately to Hyundai’s production of the first completely South Korean engineered and produced car ––the Pony––in 1975.

In 1998, Hyundai acquired 51% of Kia Motor Corporation (now changed to Kia Corporation). This, Hyundai Motor Group was formed.

Are Kia and Hyundai the Same Manufacturer?

Technically, no. Kia and Hyundai aren’t the same manufacturer. They are more like corporate sisters with Hyundai Motor Group being the parent company.

So, while models such as the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade share platforms and underpinnings, they are still entirely different brands that stand alone.

How do the prices of Hyundai and Kia compare?

According to a comparison by U.S. News, Hyundai and Kia share a corporate parent, and their vehicles have shared parts, but they are still entirely different brands that stand alone.

The prices of Hyundai and Kia cars vary depending on the model and features. Here are some examples of how the prices of Hyundai and Kia compare in different categories:

1.Subcompact Cars

Kia Rio is the only subcompact car between the two brands, and it brings solid fuel economy and a comfortable ride. Hyundai discontinued the Accent in the U.S. after 2022.

2.Compact Cars

Hyundai Elantra is a fantastic compact car that Hyundai offers in a variety of configurations, including a high-performance N variant.

The car edged out the Kia Forte in overall scores by 0.1 points, showing how closely they’re matched.

Kia fans will be pleased with the Forte, as it offers a value-forward price and a spacious interior.

3.Midsize Cars

The Kia K5 and Hyundai Sonata are excellent choices in the midsize sedan category, but the K5 topped the Sonata with an overall score of 8.3.

The Kia excelled with a comfortable interior, generous standard tech, and good safety equipment.

It’s also surprisingly engaging to drive and offers attractive styling.

The Sonata lacks power, especially with the base engine on board, but it has good ride quality and returns solid fuel economy.

It also offers a spacious interior, and its cabin is filled with nicer-than-expected materials.

4.Minivans

Kia wins by default, as Hyundai doesn’t offer a minivan.

The Carnival is a solid entry in the segment, though, offering an upscale interior, plenty of great tech, and a standard V6 engine.
